yasmina says: Great read. Good characterisations and a fab start to a series. A bit like a young Sherlock Holmes and pals transplanted to a dystopian Ghostbusters. Throw in some special powers only children and teenagers have, a bit of chemistry between the charismatic, orphaned Sherlockian teen guy (Lockwood of the title) and the new team recruit, uber feisty Lucy Carlyle, and you have an enjoyable page-turner. As underdogs running their own agency, Lockwood & Co., the teenagers are up against the other adult-led paranormal agencies, searching for ghostbusting business and just manage to stay alive and solvent by the skin of their teeth. Not a life-changing, or thought-provoking book but it's not supposed to be: just good fun! Hakkyo says: I think I just fell in love with Jonathan Stroud.I am very stingy with my 5 star ratings. The book has to touch my heart, change my life, and be really well written to get 5 stars from me. This book was fun, scary, clever, full of memorable characters,... and teeming with the kind of vivid details and excellent writing that makes you feel like you fell in the rabbit hole and don't want to come out. The plot was twisty and very well paced. The world was terrifyingly believable- expert world building actually. And I still can't get over all the great turns of speech he used to describe everything. Trees slinking, shadows dripping... etc. etc. etc. Every passage was spooky and perfect. Almost a ghost busters/steampunk/hardy boys twist. Can't wait to read the next book!Parent report: Much suspense and blood and danger, but no sex, swearing or uncomfortable things your kids might ask you about at a dinner party. Highly recommend for kids of all ages who love ghost stories but aren't easily given to nightmares.MoreLessShow More Show Less
